PUTIN'S WITNESSES

Dir: Vitaly Mansky
Latvia / Switzerland / Czech Republic / 2018 / 102mins

‘Not just a major, access-rich overview of recent history, but a compelling work of personal self-reckoning, one that should resonate with a broad swath of audiences at a time of international political questioning and activism.’ - Variety

Russian filmmaker Vitaly Mansky has a unique perspective on Vladimir Putin. In the early 2000’s he made a trilogy of documentaries, ‘Red Tsars: Presidents of Russia’, on Gorbachev, Yeltsin and Putin for the Russian government. Now living in self-imposed exile in Latvia, Mansky has used the outtakes from these works in Putin’s Witnesses – an eerie fly-on-the-wall documentary, which traces Putin’s rise to power and explores how the president has sustained control of the USSR for nearly two decades.

Putin’s Witnesses gains intimate access to Putin from 1999-2000, covering the president’s first election and offering a rare, up-close portrait of Putin as he flourishes from Deputy Prime Minister to one of the world’s most powerful leaders.
